HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Macy’s on South Lake, Fair Oaks Court housing development
and the restored front steps of the Civic Auditorium shared honors last
week with nine other properties in receiving a Pasadena Historic
Preservation award.
The sixth annual awards program at La Casita Del Arroyo honors the best
examples of preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of historic
properties.
The awards were presented by the city’s Historic Preservation
Commission, which acts as an advisory body to Pasadena City Council,
proactively seeking to raise awareness of preservation as a desired
land-use option through development review and nomination of individual
landmarks and landmark districts.
Pasadena has long been recognized for its impressive variety of
architectural styles and historic buildings, with many designed by
notable architects such as Greene & Greene, Myron Hunt, Wallace Neff,
Sylvanus Marston, Richard Neutra and others.
Historic preservation is one of the city’s defining characteristics,
with more than 1,000 properties in the National Register of Historic
Places, more than 50 works by Greene & Greene, 18 local landmark
districts, and 85 individually designated landmarks.
The city’s Historic Preservation Awards occur during a nationwide
observance of Preservation Month. “This Place Matters" is the theme of
the month-long celebration, sponsored by National Trust for Historic
Preservation.
