miss the Rose Bowl Open House
Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's free! See it like you never have
before - the stadium from field seats, press box, locker rooms, media center,
and field; enjoy a free hot dog from the official stadium concessionaire; play
interactive games on the stadium field, hear all about the past, current, and
future Rose Bowl.
Docents
will offer fascinating facts about this historic stadium. And, you will learn
about the Rose Bowl Operating Company's exciting plan to renovate and restore
the stadium and make it fit for the future.
The stadium, which seats more than 90,000 people, is the proud home of the
annual Rose Bowl Game, BCS national college football championship games every
four years, home football games of the UCLA Bruins, annual Fourth of July
celebrations, concerts, filmings and the famous R. G. Canning Flea Market the
second Sunday of every month.
A national historic landmark built in 1922, the stadium furthered its
world-class reputation by hosting five NFL Super Bowl games, the 1984 Olympic
soccer matches, the 1994 Men's World Cup, the 1999 Women's World Cup and
numerous other memorable events over the past 87 years.
The open house is hosted by the Rose Bowl Operating Company, Pasadena Heritage,
Linda Vista Annandale Association, West Pasadena Residents Association and East
Arroyo Residents Association; sponsors include the city of Pasadena, NAACP
Pasadena Branch, Pasadena Center Operating Company and Pasadena Chamber of
Commerce.
Park free in Lot F and enter the stadium through Gate G. For more information
visit www.rosebowlstadium.com
or call 577-3100.
Even sparklers and “safe and sane” fireworks can reach 1,000° Fahrenheit,
with the potential for serious burns and property damage. Combine that with
Southern California’s dry summer climate and Pasadena’s brushy hillsides, and
it’s a recipe for disaster this Independence Day.
That’s why the Pasadena Municipal Code outlaws the possession, sale, use or
discharge of any kind of fireworks inside the city limits. Police and fire crews
and a cadre of volunteers will be out in force over the Fourth of July weekend
to confiscate fireworks and watch for suspicious activity, fire hazards or signs
of fire. Offenders will be subject to citation or arrest and will be prosecuted
to the fullest extent of the law.
The best and safest way to celebrate the holiday is by watching the Americafest
professional fireworks extravaganza at the Rose Bowl Stadium with family and
friends. Find tickets at
www.ticketmaster.com or call (800) 745-3000.
To prevent any flare-ups, the Fire Department will apply a fire retardant called
Phos-Chek to brush areas surrounding the stadium. The main ingredients are
phosphates and fertilizers to help re-vegetate the trees and grassland.
For more information call Pasadena Fire Department at 744-7276 or Pasadena
Police Department at 744-4501.
A new group of property owners will be honored for protecting Pasadena’s
landmarks during the 6th annual Historic Preservation Awards.
Scheduled for Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at La Casita Del Arroyo, 177 S. Arroyo
Blvd., the annual program recognizes outstanding efforts to restore,
rehabilitate and maintain some of Pasadena’s finest architectural buildings.
Our community has long been recognized for its impressive variety of
architectural styles and historic buildings, many designed by Greene & Greene,
Myron Hunt, Wallace Neff, Sylvanus Marston, Richard Neutra and others.
Preserving these landmarks has become one of Pasadena’s proudest achievements.
There are more than 1,000 properties listed in the National Register of Historic
Places, more than 50 works by Greene & Greene, 17 local landmark districts and
80 individual historic landmarks.
Last year, Pasadena’s historic City Hall shared honors with Santa Fe Station,
Snyder Diamond Store, First Lutheran Church, First Financial and Pinocchio’s
Pizza in the category of commercial/ institutional, and 10 residential property
owners were recognized.

banquet, call 744-7310.
Do
you have some business to take care of at City Hall? If you’re driving,
you’ll be able to take advantage of longer time limits and operating hours for
most meters.
The time limit for parking meters along Garfield Avenue, Thurgood Marshall
Street, Ramona Street and Holly Street has been extended to one hour between 7
a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays in the Civic Center.
Operating hours will also be extended along Colorado Boulevard and Green Street
between Marengo and Los Robles. The one-hour meters will be in operation from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m. daily beginning mid-June. This change will help speed up the
turnover of spaces evenings and Sundays, giving you better access to convenient,
short-term parking.
Validated, long-term parking will still be available in the Paseo Colorado
parking structure and the meters around City Hall will remain free evenings and
Sundays.
Whether you’re visiting Barbados, Bangladesh or Botswana this season,

California, Pasadena’s Travel Clinic offers a full range of immunizations and
