"Serving
the youth of Pasadena is the primary goal of the Pasadena Police
Department and represents an investment in the future of Pasadena.
The Pasadena Police Foundation is an indispensable partner in that
effort".
Bernard
K. Melekian
Chief
of Police
The
Pasadena Police Foundation was founded in 1993 to foster
involvement of the Pasadena Community with its Police Department.
The purpose of the Foundation is to promote and fund programs that
further the goals and efforts of the Police Department, but are
not fully paid for by the city's general fund.
In
June of 1999 the Pasadena Police Foundation adopted the theme of
"Cops Giving Kids Hope" as a focus statement towards the
foundation's ultimate mission of providing funds for youth based
programs and activities. Monies raised by the Pasadena
Police Foundation are obtained through private or individual
contributions, charitable foundations or organizations and through
grant applications.
The
Board of Directors of the Pasadena Police Foundation is comprised
of (but not limited to) devoted community business professionals,
clergy and community leaders. Since it's inception, the
Foundation has accomplished various projects focused on helping
the Pasadena Police Department serve the community. To date,
the Pasadena Police Foundation has helped fund the department's
first K-9 unit. It has made significant contributions to
police sponsored programs involving Pasadena area youth, such as
the PAL ( Police Activities League),
and the very successful YAB (Youth
Accountability Board), a second chance intervention
program for first time youthful offenders. The Foundation
has also contributed to the Summer Youth
Leadership Conference, The Junior
Public Safety Academy and the Youth
Advisor Program. The Foundation also provides
funding for police department employees to attend community
functions, luncheons and dinners, allowing members of the
department to actively support and participate socially in the
community they serve. In addition, the Foundation provided
sponsorship for the 1999 California Police Summer Games, hosted by
the Pasadena Police Department. While providing funds for
worthy police sponsored projects, many members of the foundation
board also serve as volunteers in police sponsored
events, such as the 1999 Summer Games, Citizen's Police
Academy and Review Boards. In addition the Foundation
sponsors an annual "Breakfast with the Chief of
Police" , hosted specifically to inform the
community of the goals and accomplishments of the Pasadena Police
Department.
