UPDATES TO
SINGLE-FAMILY DEVELOPMENT STANDARDS
The
City of Pasadena is considering changes to the Pasadena Municipal
Code related to the ‘bulk and mass’ of single-family residences
The City’s Mansionization Ordinance was first adopted
in 1991, with the most recent minor updates completed in 2005. The
City Council has directed staff to study whether the existing
development standards should be modified to ensure that the scale of
new construction is appropriate with existing development. The area
of analysis is expected to focus primarily on large non-hillside
properties in single-family zones. Development standards that will
be examined include gross floor area, lot coverage, setbacks, and
height.
In June 2008, staff conducted a Community Workshop
with the Planning Commission and public. In the fall of 2008, staff
conducted three community meetings to identify issues and gather
comments from the public. Staff incorporated many of the public’s
comments in the proposed amendments. In April 2009, the proposed
amendments went before the Planning Commission, and in June 2009
before the City Council. The City Council approved the amendments
and requested staff to return in September 2009 with the ordinance
text. The amendments are anticipated to be effective in October
2009.
