Teen Summer Reading Club
Pasadena Public Library
Saturday, 20 – Sunday, August 16
Hey teens (grades 7-12) -- want to know
how to easily win prizes this summer? Read! Every time you finish a
book, a magazine, comic book, graphic novel, manga or audio book, simply
stop by a Pasadena Public Library site, pick up and fill out a prize
entry slip with a bit of information about you and the book and drop it
into a prize box. If we pull out your name during our weekly drawing,
you win a prize! Everyone is entered into the end-of -summer grand prize
drawing. Prize drawings start the week of July 6.

Try It @ Your
Library programs are a special part of our club this year. These
special workshops are week-long events, allowing you to do really
unusual things, from digital photography to stage magic. You
need to sign up in advance, because class sizes are very limited. Here's a list of the events:

Crafts |

Oriental Fusion Crafts
Make beautiful baskets and more from
recycled milk cartons, based on a traditional style from Japan. These
crafts are incredible and make great gifts! This workshop will be led by
the staff of Reiyukai America.
This workshop will be in Teen Central at the Central Library, July 13 -

DIY Crafts
Crafting techniques of all kinds in this Do It Yourself-Craft
session. Make an accessory to wear, something to organize your life,
something for a gift. Heather Hilliard will lead this workshop at

Food |

Fast Food Fixings is your
chance to learn how to fix food that's both tasty and healthy, with the
help of chefs from the community. You'll even get to help cater an event
at the end of the workshops.

Illustration and Visual Arts |

U Design It
will let you design a T-shirt, including printing your design onto the
fabric the professional way. Instructors from the Armory Center for the
Arts will be on hand to instruct and assist.

Character Design
This class is for anyone who loves to draw characters, regardless of
skill level. Create and develop many characters for video games,
animation films and illustrations through fun and exciting exercises
that strengthen your conceptual ability and skills. Learn how to develop
a character layout sheet, model sheet and a turn-around. Brainstorming
along with conceptualization of a story and ideas will be emphasized.

Comic Book Illustration
For beginning or advanced students, 5 day course in which students
will explore the art of storytelling and design principles that involve
creating comics or longer stories. This course covers brainstorming and
collaborative exercises, character development, several comic book
tricks and secrets. All students will take home copies of the class
project and their own comic-book/ story.

Manga Drawing
Teens asked for it and now it’s here - a week-long workshop by
Janell Mithani on the art and drawing of Manga! Attend these sessions to

Learn how to take your best shot with professional photographer Janell
Mithani. Enter the best of your photos in the photography contest

The Eyes Have
It: Film Workshop
“Lights, cameras, action!” Here’s your chance to create a film in
collaboration with others from start to finish including: theme
development, film shooting and final editing. Instructors from the

Performing Arts |

Dance, Dance Evolution
Learn basic dance warm-up techniques, followed by a choreographed
jazz piece, culminating in a dance performance for parents and family on
July 18. At the performance, each teen will also be given the
opportunity to show their own creativity with a one minute dance routine
they have choreographed and practiced. You'll be amazed at what you
accomplish in the Try It Dance Troupe! This workshop is led by Dr. Jan
deSal.

Magic Revealed
Learn the tricks of the trade from Wayne the Magician. All materials
will be supplied and students will all get a kit of basic tricks to
keep. Practice prestidigitation and amaze friends and family at a
fun-filed magic show starring you! Count hours practicing and performing
for your school’s community service hour requirements!

Puppeteering
A Swazzle Puppeteer (www.swazzle.com)
team member will guide teens as they work in small groups to develop
short puppet skits based on modern retellings of popular fairytales,
design and build puppets, and paint backdrops. Students will also learn
the basics of puppet manipulation and the principles of dynamic
performance. Friends and family members will be invited to watch the
skits at a public performance on the last day of the workshop. Count
hours practicing and performing for your school’s community service hour
requirements!

Science and Technology |

Robotics
Learn about robotics and how to program their movements. At the end
of the session you and your robot will participate in a special tobot
obstacle course showcasing your robot and what it can do. This program
will be directed by scientists from JPL.
