BOARD OF EDUCATION             

Seats Open/Term:  The terms for Pasadena Board of Education, Seats 1, 3, 5, and 7 will expire in May 2009 and these seats will be open for election.    The Board of Education is comprised of seven representatives and they are elected by voters residing within the Pasadena Unified School District area, which includes Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, and various unincorporated County pockets outside the City limits.   (See PUSD Map)    The above four seats are currently held by the following representatives:   Seat 1 – Mike Babcock, Seat 3 - Scott Phelps, Seat 5 – Esteban Lizardo, and Seat 7 - Ed Honowitz.  The terms for Board of Education Seats 1, 3, 5  and 7 are four years.    There are no term limit provisions for serving on the Pasadena Board of Education. 

Nomination Period:  The nomination period will begin on Monday, November 17, 2008, at 7:30 a.m., and will close on Friday, December 12, 2008, at 5:30 p.m.   The City Clerk will conduct two identical Candidate Workshops for candidates and/or their representatives on Monday, November 17, 2008, 8:00 a.m., and Friday, November 21, 2008, 5:30 p.m., City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Avenue, Grand Conference Room S038 (City Hall basement).  Filing papers will be issued at the beginning of the sessions and detailed candidate information will be provided.  All candidates and/or their representatives are encouraged to attend one of these workshops.  Each session will last approximately one hour, and there will be an opportunity for questions.   Nomination papers will also be issued during normal office hours (7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.) at the City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Avenue, Room S228, Pasadena (appointments encouraged, 626-744-4124).   City Hall is closed November 27 and 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday, and every other Friday (November 21 and December 5).  The City Clerk’s Office will be open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the December 12 deadline to file nomination papers.  

Extended Nomination Period:   If an incumbent officer does not file 
nomination papers by the December 12, 2008 deadline, the period to nominate any qualified person other than the incumbent is extended to Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. for that incumbent’s office.
 

Nomination Petition/Qualifications/Filing Fee/Optional Candidate's Statement

  • Nomination petition must be issued and filed within the above nomination period.
  • Nomination petition must be signed by not less than 100 qualified voters of the Pasadena Unified School District.
  • A candidate must be a registered voter and reside within the Pasadena Unified School District.  
  • There is a $25.00 filing fee at the time nomination papers are filed.
  • There will be a $2,000 deposit if a candidate wishes to have a statement printed in the sample ballot pamphlet (optional).   Actual charges will be determined upon publication and either a refund or an invoice for the difference will be sent to the candidate after the election.
