FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, May 9, 2008

Pasadena, CA. – The Pasadena Police Department will aggressively enforce the state’s occupant protection laws as part of California’s 2008 Click It or Ticket mobilization, taking place May 12-June 1. The campaign relies on heavy enforcement and public education at the local level as a means to help California achieve the highest seat belt use rate in the nation. California currently has the nation’s fourth highest seat belt use rate at 94.6 percent.

California’s seat belt law which requires that every passenger in the car, including the driver, is required to wear a seat belt at all times. If stopped and found to be in violation, law enforcement officers will issue citations without warning. Tickets for first seat belt violations range from $80 to $91 for adults and $330 to $401 for children under age 16, depending on the county. Additionally, children age 12 and under are required to ride properly restrained in the back seat.

Pasadena is one of more than 280 law enforcement agencies statewide participating in this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization. “Our involvement in this is important to the overall vehicular safety in the City of Pasadena,” says Acting Chief of Police.

Lt. Phlunte Riddle (626) 744-7159 ¼br> PASADENA, CA - The Pasadena Police Department will conduct a DUI Enforcement Check Point on Monday, May 5, 2008.  The hours of operation will be between 7:00 pm – 3:00 am.  “It is our intent to keep drunk drivers off the roads and this DUI program is a proven and effective tool for achieving the Pasadena Police Department’s goal of removing impaired drivers from our streets,” says Acting Chief of Police Christopher Vicino.

The potential for an impaired driver to become involved in a traffic collision is greater due to a driver’s slowed response or poor decision making while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  These types of enforcement programs also provides the police department an opportunity to educate the driving public in regards to safer driving habits and the consequences of drinking and driving.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
