For the third year in a row, PUSD proudly took part in Poetry Out Loud, a National Recitation Contest. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation created Poetry Out Loud in 2005. State arts agencies throughout the country - including the California Arts Council - bring Poetry Out Loud to each state, with more than 300,000 high school students participating annually.

Poetry Out Loud begins at the classroom level and winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to a regional and/or state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals. Students from John Muir High School and Marshall Fundamental School competed against one another by reciting classic and contemporary poems from memory.

The school winner from Marshall Fundamental School was sophomore Aida Woldegiorgis who recited the poems “Romance” by Claude McKay and “I, Too” by Langston Hughes. Brianna Atkins was the runner-up. John Muir High School Senior Jaliya Quinones won first place at her school with “Solitude” by Ella Wheeler and “Self-Portrait” by Robert Creeley. Runners-up were Juan Jauregui Boyd and Katharine Bradley. Teachers Armine Iknadossian, at Marshall Fundamental, and Carlene Browne-Hart, John Muir High School lead the program at their school sites.

On January 20, 2010, school winners went on to compete against one another at the District Finals. PUSD Arts Education Coordinator, Marshall Ayers served as master of ceremonies for the competition, which was judged by a panel consisting of Dr. Kathy Onoye, Executive Director Elementary, Bridget Lloyd, Director of Education Theatre 360, and teacher and writer Amy Froeschle, of Webster Elementary. Both students scored high marks with powerful and moving recitations of their chosen poems, with Aida Woldegiorgis winning first place. She will represent PUSD and compete at the L.A. County Finals on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at The Actor’s Gang Theatre in Culver City. The Pasadena Board of Education will recognize all the winners and runner-ups on February 9, 2010 at 6 pm.

Students, Teachers, and Judges at District Finals

Knight Digital Media Center is now taking applications for the 20 expense-paid "camper" spots for the week-long News Entrepreneur Boot Camp at USC. The competitive selection process is looking for people who have journalism skills and have great ideas for start-up news sites but they lack the business and entrepreneurial skills that can help them succeed.

City projects may include: air treatment facilities, open spaces, waste collection and/or storm waters management systems, to name a few.

The DCA manages the City of Los Angeles Public Percent-for-Art Program. By funding and partnering with the City's arts and cultural nonprofit communities, DCA supports the creativity of our local artists. Artists must also demonstrate the ability to work in collaboration with project teams, including architects, landscape architects, engineers, fabricators, scientists, and general contractors. October 30, 2009

Yesterday, Congress passed a $12.5 million funding increase as part of the FY 2010 Interior Appropriations bill for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). President Obama is scheduled to sign this bill into law by October 31, which concludes National Arts and Humanities Month. The nation's two federal grantmaking cultural agencies will now each have budgets of $167.5 million, their highest funding levels in 16 years. As so many state and local governments have had to cut arts budgets across the country, this well-timed federal appropriations increase for the arts is a welcome infusion of funds.

The FY 2010 Interior Appropriations bill (H.R. 2996) was passed in the House by a vote of 247ญญ-178 and in the Senate by a vote of 72-28. Please play your part and send a quick e-mail to your members of Congress at the Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center and let them know how much the arts will benefit from this funding increase.

What's Next:

While the NEA and NEH's budgets have now been finalized, many other federal programs such as the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are still operating under a continuing resolution until December 18, 2009. We will keep you posted on these legislative updates in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, please save the dates of April 12-13, 2010 for National Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. With the incredible advocacy success that we had this year that included $50 million in the federal economic stimulus bill for arts jobs and now the $12.5 million increase in NEA and NEH budgets, we need to keep building on this positive momentum. Come join us.

Help us also continue this important work by becoming an official member of the Arts Action Fund. If you are not already an official member, you can join the Arts Action Fund today -- it's free and simple.

 POLISH MAYORS VISIT CULTURAL AFFAIRS

Dear Rochelle,

Thank you so much for meeting with our visitors last Monday. We really enjoyed learning about the Robinson Memorial and all the fantastic cultural programs Pasadena offers. I will be sure to attend one of these programs and will keep a look-out for the temporary artwork you mentioned. We really appreciate the time you spent with us and I know the visitors left with some great ideas that they can apply to their work at home.

I have attached some photos of you and the visitors.

Thanks again,

Dana

Dear Pasadena Arts & Culture Community: Do you support a Federal cabinet position for the Arts?

Click here to view the petition

Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, the United States has never created such a position. We in the arts need this and the country needs the arts--now more than ever. Please take a moment to sign this important petition and then pass it on to your friends and colleagues.

California Arts Advocates (CAA) was founded in 1997 as a means of bringing together individuals and organizations, who believe in the importance and vitality of the arts in California, and to support public investment in the arts and legislation that benefits arts and culture programs that serve California.
