at the Pasadena Playhouse.

programs of excellence that expand exposure and access to the arts.

October 30, 2009
Yesterday, Congress passed a $12.5 million funding increase as
part of the FY 2010 Interior Appropriations bill for both the
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment
for the Humanities (NEH). President Obama is scheduled to sign
this bill into law by October 31, which concludes
National Arts and Humanities Month. The nation's two federal
grantmaking cultural agencies will now each have budgets of
$167.5 million, their highest funding levels in 16 years. As so
many state and local governments have had to cut arts budgets
across the country, this well-timed federal appropriations
increase for the arts is a welcome infusion of funds.

The FY 2010 Interior Appropriations bill (H.R. 2996) was passed
in the House by a vote of 247ญญ-178 and in the Senate by a vote
of 72-28. Please
play your part and send a quick e-mail to your members of
Congress at the Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center and let
them know how much the arts will benefit from this funding
increase.
What's Next:
While the NEA and NEH's budgets have now been finalized, many
other federal programs such as the Institute of Museum and
Library Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are
still operating under a continuing resolution until December 18,
2009. We will keep you posted on these legislative updates in
the coming weeks.
In the meantime, please save the dates of April 12-13, 2010 for
National Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. With the
incredible advocacy success that we had this year that included
$50 million in the federal economic stimulus bill for arts jobs
and now the $12.5 million increase in NEA and NEH budgets, we
need to keep building on this positive momentum. Come join us.
Help us also continue this important work by becoming an

GOLD LINE TOUR
Dear All,
Attached is a flyer of a great
tour conducted by historian Michael Several on behalf of a grant
he received from the California Council for Humanities about the
Gold Line project and specifically the art program. The tour is
free and cost that of an all day pass on the Metro. I know this
is short notice for the tour this weekend, but he is also
conducting these in November and a couple in 2010.
I’ve known Michael for many
years and he always does wonderful research. I will be working
with him on the November tour which is tentatively planned for
Sunday November 15th, 2009.
For more information, please
respond to the email address on the flyer.

Dear Arts and Education Funders,
The case studies report on the first 11 school districts to join
L.A. County’s arts education initiative: Arts for All: The
Vanguard Districts – Case Studies from the First Five Years.
The Arts Commission commissioned the studies to document lessons
learned by the school districts as they developed arts education
plans and started implementation. The case studies report was
originally an internal document but the findings are so compelling
we felt it was important to share our lessons with all those
concerned with arts education.
A press release regarding the report is available here:
http://www.lacountyarts.org/announcements/anncmt_A4A_casestud_rel.pdf.
The full report is available online at
http://lacountyarts.org/artsed/casestudies.html. We’ve broken it
down into sections to make the information more accessible. The
Executive Summary is a good place to start. The case studies for
each of the 11 districts can be accessed separately. I would love to
hear your comments and feedback on the report and hope you will pass
on this message to your colleagues.

POLISH MAYORS VISIT
CULTURAL AFFAIRS
Dear Rochelle,
Thank you so much for meeting with our
visitors last Monday. We really enjoyed learning about the
Robinson Memorial and all the fantastic cultural programs
Pasadena offers. I will be sure to attend one of these
programs and will keep a look-out for the temporary artwork
you mentioned. We really appreciate the time you spent with
us and I know the visitors left with some great ideas that
they can apply to their work at home.
I have attached some photos of you and the
visitors.
Thanks again,
Dana

Dear Pasadena Arts &
Culture Community: Do you support a Federal cabinet position
for the Arts?
Click here to view the petition
Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask
President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts.
While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or
Culture for centuries, the United States has never created
such a position. We in the arts need this and the country
needs the arts--now more than ever. Please take a moment to
sign this important petition and then pass it on to your
friends and colleagues.
