Pasadena is utilizing Electric-
Assist bicycles in a variety of applications in the City as listed below.  For more information on Electric-Assist bicycles, check out our list of some of the many Electric-Assist bicycle manufacturers.

Usage by the Pasadena Police Department:

As a team effort, Pasadena Water and Power and the Pasadena Police Department are demonstrating the effective use of electric vehicle technology by utilizing electric-assist bicycles.  The Police Department recently created a bicycle patrol unit and the EV bikes are part of the fleet.  The bicycles are from Smith & Wesson but the electric-assist modification is provided by ZAPWorld.com.

Usage by the Transportation Department for Parking Enforcement:

In another team venture, Pasadena Water and Power and Parking Enforcement have joined together to provide four (4) electric-assist bicycles for some of its personnel.  These bicycles were also purchased from ZAPWorld.com. Parking Enforcement plans on using  4 bicycles as a replacement for the Scooters that they currently use.  The main usage will be during the day and evening shifts in the downtown areas and for patrol of parking meters. Parking Enforcement will also be using the bicycles to patrol the Shoppers Lane parking lots on South Lake Avenue.

The addition of these 4 electric bicycles triples the current fleet of electric-assist bicycles, and increase their usage in patrol of major business districts and parking meter zones where scooter patrol is less efficient due to high traffic volumes and pedestrian activity.  Through this effort, it is anticipated that 28 scooter trips per week will be eliminated, encompassing a total of 140 miles.  Fewer scooter trips will result in reduced fuel and maintenance costs attached with maintaining a safe and fully operational fleet of scooters.  The ongoing maintenance costs associated with the electric-assist bicycles can be performed on-site at a much reduced cost. Aside from the reduction in maintenance costs, the additional bicycles would more importantly reduce pollution by eliminating scooter trips on a regular basis.  This is consistent with a vision of building a cleaner, more livable community for residents and visitors as well.
